DIY Game Night Party Game

One of the best party games is a DIY game called 'Superlatives'. All you need is pencil and paper. The game can scale from 3 to 20 teams. Teams can range from 1-8 people.

Each team gets pencils and pieces of scrap paper about the size of a credit card. Give each team a number and ask each team to come up with a team name.

Identify one or two people to be 'hosts' for the evening. Identify one person to be the 'score keeper'. The hosts and score keeper can be on any team and they get to play the game.

Get Ready to Play:

Before the game starts have every person in the room write down 1-2 superlatives on pieces of paper (one per paper, do not fold). For example:

  • most likely to be a vegan

  • best Netflix binger

  • most likely to win a staring contest

  • worst rapper

  • most likely to sleep through an earthquake

The host collects all the superlatives and puts them in a bowl.

Then have every person in the room write down 4-6 famous characters on pieces of paper (one per paper, do not fold), dead or alive, real or fictional - any singer, actor, athlete, cartoon characters, etc. For example:

  • George Washington

  • Taylor Swift

  • Mickey Mouse

  • Lebron James

  • Harry Potter

The host collects all the famous people and puts them in a second bowl.

For the rest of the game each team will be submitting one piece of paper as their team answer for each of the upcoming questions.

Each team now identifies one person on their team to be the 'scribe' that will write down their team answer to be submitted to the host. The scribe will make sure their team number is on their answer sheets they submit (so the host knows what team submitted the answer).

Before the game begins have each team shout out their team name and number. Have the scorekeeper list the teams on a score sheet.

Play Time:

The host pulls out 4 famous characters from the bowl and reads them aloud. As the names are read, each team scribe writes down the 4 characters on a piece of paper. For example:

- Superman

- Abe Lincoln

- Beyonce

- Big Bird

The host pulls out 1 superlative from the bowl and reads it aloud. For example:

- Enjoys all-you-can-eat buffets

Each teams now discusses among themselves which one of the characters best fits the superlative and circles that character.

Someone on each team brings their piece of paper to the host (make sure your team number is on the paper, do not fold).

The host reads the answers aloud and sorts the answers that match.

Scoring (majority wins):

If 4 teams had 'Big Bird' and 2 teams have 'Superman', the 4 teams in the majority (Big Bird) all score 1 point. The scorekeeper keeps track of points.

Keep on Playing:

Repeat with 4 new characters and a new superlative.

At the end of night, the team with the most points wins!

Additional Tips:

The more teams the better. For example, 4 teams of 2 people is better that 3 teams of 2-3 people.

Rather than randomly selecting characters, before the game begins sort the submitted characters into categories such as singers, actors, athletes, cartoon characters, historical figures, etc. Then select 4 characters at a time from a category. This will make the selection process a bit more challenging and the discussions more interesting.

When there is a tie, for example:
3 teams said ‘Big Bird’
3 teams said ‘Superman’
2 teams said ‘Beyonce’
It is fun to have an AI chat bot break the tie among the tied characters:
‘Who enjoys buffets more, Big Bird or Superman?’

Use AI to create a list of funny superlatives if you run out of the ones that were submitted.
